Haiku... MSHP Style

For the annual talent/no talent show earlier in the month, Katie, Jenny, and I wrote twelve haiku about the park, historical figures, and other fun Island things. To spare a lot of repeating, etc., I'll for now direct those of you that wish to read to Katie's blog (linked on the right side of this blog) to her August 16th post with the haiku. It may not be amusing to anyone who doesn't work here, but it is also absolutely stellar poetry.

Dancing and Boating

This past Saturday we did the necessary big fort staff trip to the Grand to go dancing. It took us til this last part of the summer and, since many members of staff are heading back to school this coming week, we figured we'd better get our groove on soon! Also, this past Monday (as in yesterday from the day that I'm posting this) I finally was able to make it to Round Island, a trip at least three seasons in the making. Both were of course v. fun, more than expected. Here are some photos...

(photos: Mmmm... Gatehouse onion rings...; Melissa, Jessica, Sandy, Maria, and Geoff dancing at the Grand; the Terrace Room at the Grand; me and the faux boyfriend (Lee May); and a group photo of the attending fort staff + one heir to a fudge fortune.)

(photos: Cap'n Nick, co-owner of the boat; Trace, Nick, and Kris helping to pull the boat in at Round Island; Kris and me looking excited to finally be on Round Island; tall ship #1 sailing in front of the fort; tall ship #2 and the Round Island Lighthouse; and Trace teaching Nick to fife.)

Crazy Couple of Weeks!!!

The last two weeks have been absolutely crazy busy. With everything from visiting past employees and parents, the Blacksmith Convention, Talent/No Talent Show, Pub Runners weekend, crafty "overnight," Staff Recognition night, Peggy's birthday, Jeff Daniels at the Grand, etc.... it all was quite fun and quite busy. Now it's back to hunting for a job, getting ready to close the downtown historic houses, and gear up for post season. It's amazing how quickly it's all gone by!

Anyway, here are some photos from the hectic period....

(photos: The fort in the evening from the "secret" entrance... how lovely; Jenny, Lyle (how he makes them blush...), and Maria; me and Dave, another of my favorite blacksmiths; the Island in the evening near Ste. Anne's; and John's last square dance (please note Fr. Rey in the background!).)

(photos: Lily, Katie, and Peggy: the 8's - those with bdays on the 8th of a month; moon rising over Round Island; Peggy as a Leo (horoscope-wise) on her birthday; Trace, Phil, Lee, and Dave at a jazzy-winey; and Carolyn - how we miss her now that she's moved to flippin' New York.)

(photos: The Island at twilight; Main Street at night; Katie and Jeff Daniels; Lee, Katie, Peggy, and Heather in front of a cool photo of the fort at the Grand after dinner and Jeff Daniels; and Leslie (the sister) at the pictographs at Lake Superior Provincial Park.)

(photos: Dad, Mom, and Leslie doing the face in Canada; Leslie, Dad, and me in Canada; the family at Chippewa Falls, Canada; Maria working hard during a dance demonstration at the fort; and Carolyn after working too hard at the Biddle House.)
